Technology has made security easier in many ways, but you still have to use the traditional methods of securing premises. Here are 5 tips to secure a commercial building;

1. Strengthen the entry points

Although intruders are smart, the easiest way for them to gain access to your building is through the entryways. Make sure that your doors and windows are of solid construction with certified locks. You should make it as hard as possible for anybody to get into the building without permission. Secure every entry, including the parking area and emergency exit. Use security gadgets and sensors that will go off when someone tries to force entry.

2. Secure data

Company information is most of the time more valuable than the equipment so it must be secured. Ensure the server room is always locked, and only a few trained people can access it. All files must also be under lock and key, and the computers should be secured with strong passwords. The return on investment on any intelligence protection may not be seen in financial books, but there is peace in knowing your data is safe and secure.

3. Secure the perimeter

There are many ways to secure the surrounding, so it won’t be easy to get inside the building. The first step should be building a big perimeter wall with an electric fence around it. You can then hire a security company to man the gate and make sure that they identify everybody who gets into the premises. Security lighting and motion sensors all around are also crucial in deterring any unwanted access.

4. Integrated security system

good security system should include central monitoring, CCTV, audio intrusion detection and an alarm system that will notify the police immediately. Some security systems also enable lockdown mode, which traps the intruder in the building until the authorities arrive.

5. Employee screening and training

Statistics show that almost half of the intruders are connected to somebody on the inside. It is therefore vital that you do a thorough screening of all your employees to check their background. Implement a managed keyless entry for all staff, so you can tell who came in, when, and what time did they leave. Additionally, all employees should be trained on workplace security and how to secure their documents, computers, and all other resources.

Building security is not something that should be discrete. Make sure everybody can see the surveillance cameras going around, the extra lighting and of course, those scary soldiers standing at the gate. Making it obvious that your building is secured will make an intruder think twice about coming. But keep some elements to yourself for surprise purposes.
