trolling motor batteries

Are you looking for some effective DIY methods for installing a trolling motor battery on your fishing boat? This information will guide you through every step of the installation process that you can try out all by yourself.

Most of the boats are equipped with two battery setups for operating the boat seamlessly. These two batteries are the best marine battery for trolling motor and starter battery. The starter battery provides power to the ship, and the trolling motor battery helps the trolling motor in smooth functioning.

There are four different types of trolling motor batteries, and their installation processes are discussed below:

12 volts Battery

Firstly, join the red wire with the positive terminal of the battery. Make use of the cable in the trolling motor. Then a circuit breaker of 50-ampere needs to be added to the circuit. Now link the black wire from the engine with the negative terminal of the battery.

24 Volts Battery

In this method, two marine batteries need to be connected. They must be 12 volts batteries to obtain the power output of 24 Volt. Use the deep cycle type battery. Link the black line of the power cable of the trolling motor with the negative end of the first battery. Then link the red line of the power cable with the second battery. In this connection, a circuit breaker of 40 amperes is used for breaking the current of the link.

Now the connection between both the 12 volts batteries needs to be made. A jumper cable is required, which should connect the positive end of the first battery with the negative end of the second battery. The gauge of the jumper cable needs to be similar to that of the motor leads.

12 volts/24 volts Battery

This method also needs the application of two 12 volt batteries. They should be deep cycle batteries of the marine type. At first, the red line from the motor needs to be connected with the positive terminal of the 1st battery. A 40 amperes circuit breaker should be used. Then the black line needs to communicate with the negative terminal of the 2nd battery. A 12 volts line needs to be used along with another 40 amperes circuit breaker.

Finally, a jumper wire will be needed to establish the connection between the negative terminal of the first 12 volts battery and the positive terminal of the other cell.

36 volts Battery

It should be clearly understood that this connection method uses three marine batteries. They should be 12 volts for each of the deep cycle types. The red line of the motor’s power cable should be connected with the positive terminal of the first battery. For engines with thrust equal to or below 81 pounds, a circuit breaker of 40 amperes needs to be used. In case the thrust is above 81 pounds, a circuit breaker of 50 amperes should be applied.

The black line of the power cable will connect with the negative end of the third battery. Then two jumpers will be needed to connect the positive and negative sides of the three cells.
