World 400m champion Wayde van Niekerk has won the Olympic crown in a 43.03sec world record at the Rio Games on Sunday night.

Wayde is actually the first South African sprinter to win an Olympic gold since Bevil Rudd, also in the 400, at Antwerp 1920.
Van Niekerk was warmly congratulated on his record-breaking 400m run by the world’s fastest sprinter Usain Bolt.
Van Niekerk set a world record time of 43.03sec at the Rio Games on Sunday night.
Bolt excused himself during an interview and dashed off to congratulate Van Niekerk after his win‚ embracing the athlete and shaking his hand.
Van Niekerk retweeted video footage of the moment‚ early on Monday‚ in a post by Mathew Quinn that read: “Brilliant. Bolt stops interview to go and congratulate Van Niekerk.”
