Ster-Kinekor has announced that it will be hosting a free screening of the iconic South African film, ‘Sarafina!’ at select cinemas on Youth Day, June 16. The screening will take place at 12 noon, and tickets will be issued on a first come, first served basis at each of the cinemas.
“June 16 this year marks the 40th anniversary of the Soweto uprisings. To commemorate this auspicious event in our country’s history, we feel it is opportune to host a free screening of the film that reflects an important event in the struggle, through song and dance,” says Wanda Matandela, CEO of Ster-Kinekor Theatres.
“‘Sarafina!’ is a tribute to the youth of our young democracy and, 40 years on, it still carries a relevant message to today’s learners. We encourage them to come through to our cinemas and enjoy this free screening, in celebration of their special day,” adds Matandela.
The film is an anti-apartheid musical about a young Soweto girl, Sarafina (Leleti Khumalo), who experiences a political awakening. As she comes of age in the mid-70s, she is encouraged by the lessons of her teacher, Mary Masombuka (Whoopi Goldberg), who tends not to follow the white power-structure’s curriculum. In adopting a campaign of resistance against the police presented in her school, Sarafina imagines the support of her role-model, Nelson Mandela, who is her inspiration to survive.
The hit musical film, produced by Anant Singh and directed by Darrell James Roodt, stars Khumalo alongside Oscar winner Goldberg, John Kani, the late Miriam Makeba, Robert Whitehead and Mbongeni Ngema. The film was originally released in 1992.
