Google is looking for a partner to build its own chips for use in Android smartphones,The Information reported.
According to the report, Google recently spoke to manufacturers about developing microchips based on the search giant’s preferred design.
The Information said Google representatives proposed designs of chips it was interested in co-developing, including a phone’s main processor.
In addition to greater uniformity across the landscape of Android phones, Google’s new designs will enable new features it hopes to implement in the next few years.
Examples of features include baked-in support for augmented and virtual reality that needs tightly integrated software and hardware.
