Chinese find 55ft 'sea monster'

A GIANT 55 foot 'sea monster' has been found washed up on a beach in China.

The beast from the deep is so badly decayed it cannot be identified.

But according to local reports from Guangdong, in the south-east of the country, it weighed at least 4.5 TONS.

One fisherman, known only as Hwang, 66, said he was astonished by the find.

People have flocked to see the creature — despite the rotting corpse's foul stench.

It was found tangled in ropes and one theory is fisherman caught it but could not land it as it was so big.

REFUGIO, Texas (AP) — Investigators said a man has died while in the act of raping an elderly South Texas woman.

The Refugio County Sheriff's Office identified the man as 53-year-old Isabel Chavelo Gutierrez. Sheriff's Sgt. Gary Wright said the incident happened June 2 after he rode two miles by bicycle from his home to that of his 77-year-old victim in the tiny coastal community of Tivoli.

Wright said the 5'-7", 230-to-250 pound man sneaked into the woman's house and raped her at knifepoint.

During the assault, he said he wasn't feeling well, rolled over, and died.

Gutierrez' body was sent to the Nueces County medical examiner in Corpus Christi for autopsy.

Gutierrez was a registered sexual offender on parole from a sentence for aggravated sexual assault and indecency with a child.

Paramedics work to remove the injured driver from his Audi after it collided with a MyCiTi bus in Table View.

Staff Reporter

A MYCITI bus and an Audi collided in Table View last night, leaving the driver of the Audi badly injured and causing a traffic jam in the area.

The collision happened at about 7.30pm at the Marine Drive and Otto du Plessis intersection near the Dolphin Beach Hotel.

City spokeswoman Kylie Hatton said: “We believe the vehicle had been crossing over the (MyCiTi) bus lane when it was hit by a bus.”

Traffic authorities continued investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash this morning. A source said authorities were trying to ascertain whether the car may have tried to do a u-turn or had skipped a red light.

Hatton said last night that nobody in the bus was injured, and that the driver had immediately reported the incident.

South African Recruitment agents using social media for Job ads

Over the past decade, social media has metamorphosed into a dynamic form of worldwide interpersonal communication and community building. In fact, according to a 2012 Pew Global Attitudes Project report, which drew on surveys from 21 countries, social networking has spread around the world with remarkable speed. In countries such as Britain, the United States, Russia, the Czech Republic and Spain, about half of all adults now use Facebook and similar Web sites. These sites are also popular in many lower-income nations, where people, once they have access to the Internet, tend to use it for social networking. Historically, it used to be enough to have an online presence on the Internet, via a company Web site, for example, for the one-way broadcasting and distribution of information. Today, social networks such as Facebook and Twitter are driving new forms of social interaction, dialogue, exchange and collaboration. Social networking sites (referred to more broadly as social media) en…

First man ‘functionally cured’ of HIV - Big hope if this can happen here in South Africa

Since HIV was discovered 30 years ago this week, 30 million people have died from the disease, and it continues to spread at the rate of 7,000 people per day globally, the UN says.

There's not much good news when it comes to this devastating virus. But that is perhaps why the story of the man scientists call the "Berlin patient" is so remarkable and has generated so much excitement among the HIV advocacy community.

Timothy Ray Brown suffered from both leukemia and HIV when he received a bone marrow stem cell transplant in Berlin, Germany in 2007. The transplant came from a man who was immune to HIV, which scientists say about 1 percent of Caucasians are. (According to San Francisco's CBS affiliate, the trait may be passed down from ancestors who became immune to the plague centuries ago. This Wired story says it was more likely passed down from people who became immune to a smallpox-like disease.)

What happened next has stunned the dozens of scientists who are closely m…

Krol must stay – Jali

Orlando Pirates Player of the Season Andile Jali has given his full backing to Orlando Pirates coach Ruud Krol, saying on Wednesday that the Buccaneers “cannot allow” him to leave.

Krol said Wednesday that he had still not spoken with Pirates management about renewing his contract, which expired at the end of this season, a campaign in which Pirates won the Absa Premiership, the Nedbank Cup and the MTN 8.

And Jali was in no doubt about whether his coach should stay. “It will be very important that we retain him, because if we change coach now, and we have to retain three trophies with a new style of play, we will have to start all over again. We cannot allow it.”

Jali picked up R150 000 for the top award at the Pirates ceremony in Boksburg on Wednesday, adding to the Nedbank Cup Player of the Tournament he won at last weekend’s Premier Soccer League awards.

Many felt Jali should have picked up the overall PSL Footballer of the Year award that went to Ajax Cape Town’s Thulani Serero, …

Women stand up for hounded foreign shop owners

Women residents from the Ramaphosa informal settlement east of Johannesburg have stood up to spaza shop owners who tried to order their foreign competitors out of the area.

In the early hours of yesterday, the shopkeepers, members of the Greater Gauteng Business Forum, had driven around the settlement inviting residents to join them in taking action against "Somali and Kulas [Pakistani]" businessmen.

Forum members complain that the foreign nationals are in South Africa illegally, do not pay taxes and sell expired goods at low prices.

Forum members marched down the main streets of Ramaphosa, ordering the foreigners to shut shop and leave. This despite a High Court order handed down last week prohibiting the intimidation of foreign nationals, and an instruction from the Reiger Park Police Station commander to stop their "illegal march".

They chased away one Somali man and forced another to close his …
