MZANSI ’ s latest singing sensation Cici has dropped out of university to concentrate on her music career.
The 28-year-old, born Busisiwe Thwala, from Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal, says she will resume her studies once her hectic performing schedule eased up a bit.
The sexy fireball was in the third year of a Psychology degree at the University of Johannesburg when she won the talent search show South African Arts & Development Association (Saada) last year.
Her main prize was a recording contract with a music label of her choice. She chose 999 Music and Arthur Mafokate became her boss and mentor.
As with all things Mafokate touches, her career turned to gold within three months of her releasing her first single titled Runaway.
Two Metro Awards nominations and an SABC Summer Song 2015 ‘ best top 10 single’ award later, she says her life has become a rollercoaster.
“I always finish whatever I start, so I will complete my psychology degree and keep it for future needs. One never knows, I might need it,” she said.
She said she loves psychology because it speaks to human behaviour. “It challenges me and helps me better understand human beings.”
Cici said her reason for dropping out of university was so that she could give her all to music because she waited for 13 years to break into the industry.
“I will definitely die holding a microphone because that’s my calling. I will also (at a later stage) try my hand in music management as well as producing and running my own record label,” Cici said.
Before her big break, Cici was featured on music albums by several DJs, including Mbuso, Terrance, Nastee Nev and Choice.
Now she is the one featuring other artists.
Mafokate said: “I love working with an artist who is committed and knows what she wants. She is a very intelligent and strong woman. ”
