Idols SA announces top 16

Idols SA concluded the pre-recorded segment of the show with the announcement of the top 16, which consists of 10 girls and 6 boys.

Mzansi Magic’s Idols South Africa (SA) took to Twitter on Sunday, 22 August 2021, to confirm the top 16 contestants set to perform during the live performance segment of the show. The episode marked the conclusion of the pre-recorded segment of season 17 of Idols SA, after the 30 hopefuls who survived group performances during Theatre Week sang for their chance to be part of the top 16.

In a surprising final 16, the show did not follow convention by choosing eight boys and eight girls, instead, the competition opted to have a final 16 which consists of 10 girls and six boys. This will prove of interest in the manner in which the show will divide the upcoming two live episodes, which will see eight hopefuls singing each week.

While consensus has approved of the final top 16, viewers questioned the snubbing of a contestant, Kwanda. Viewers believe that despite the odds which were stacked up against him, like the song choice, he deserved a spot in the top 16. Moreover, considering that the pre-recorded aspect of the show has been concluded, Mzansi Magic is to give word this week on whether embattled judge, Somizi Mhlongo will be returning to the show or not.
