Shortly after recovering from Covid-19, Zwelinzima Vavi took to social media to praise traditional herbs. On Monday, the South African Federation of Trade Unions general secretary gushed about how traditional medicines were used to treat illnesses long before pharmacies existed.

Vavi shared a photo of himself with a plant, which appears to be umhlonyane - a traditional herb. His post read: "Traditional herbs have been used by our people for hundreds of years well before the existence of pharmacists! I used everything - from this in the pic to what is on offer in the pharmacy."

Vavi added that he tested positive for Covid-19 on 2 April and had been battling the virus for nearly a month. However, he and his wife both later tested negative for the coronavirus, meaning the SAFTU secretary general fully recovered from the virus.
