Mayor Herman Mashaba confirmed his resignation

Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba confirmed his resignation from the Democratic Alliance on Monday.

Mashaba made the announcement following the outcome of the Democratic Alliance's Federal Council meeting on Sunday.

Mashaba to resign as Joburg mayor

He said his resignation would come into effect on 27 November 2019.

He said the DA was no longer the same party he joined in 2015 and that when he joined, it was because he believed in Mmusi Maimane’s vision.

“I am gravely concerned the DA I signed up to is not that emerged from this past weekend…”

Mashaba had been executive mayor of Johannesburg since 2016.

After Zille was announced as the new Fedex chair, Mashaba announced he would hold a media briefing at 10 am on Monday.

Mashaba’s resignation could threaten the DA’s coalition government in Joburg, which is supported by the Economic Freedom Fighters.

This is a developing story.
