OLYMPIC 800m champion Caster Semenya is the most prominent nominee for this year’s Limpopo Sport and Recreation Awards, launched in Polokwane yesterday.
The popular athlete, who just won her first 400m title at the Diamond League meet in Brussels, Belgium, has been nominated in the Sportswoman of the Year category along with Carla Grobler and Leandre du Preez.
Another noteworthy nomination is that of Bafana Bafana assistant coach and Under-20 head coach, Thabo Senong, who will vie for Coach of the Year honours with Mehloti Shiwabane and Douggie Eagar.
Wheelchair tennis star Evans Maripa, who is currently at the Paralympic Games in Brazil, has been nominated for Sportsman of the Year with a Disability.
Sport and Recreation MEC Nandi Ndalane will roll out the red carpet at the Ranch Hotel in Polokwane on Saturday to welcome Limpopo’s sporting heroes. She spoke of her excitement ahead of the weekend’s ceremony, saying she hoped the awards would continue to grow in stature.
