PHENDUKILE Mngadi is living in fear of a loan shark who has threatened to smash her house!
The 49-year-old from Mofolo North, Soweto said she doesn’t know what to do because she lost the money in a scam on Facebook.
She mainly uses Facebook to share Bible verses with fellow Christians. The trouble started when a man claiming to be from Russia contacted her and said he had found healing and motivation in her verses.
He said he wanted to give me money to thank me for motivating him with my verses,” Phendukile said.
The man told her he was going to send her a bag of gifts.
Last Monday she got a message saying her parcel had arrived at Cape Town Airport but it had been seized and she needed to pay R2 500 to have it released.
“I deposited the money into an account I was sent but I later got a request for an extra R2 000. I went around borrowing money from my neighbours to pay it.”
Phendukile was then asked for another R2 000 which she had to borrow from a loan shark.
“When they started demanding money again I realised I was being scammed. I lost a total of R6 500 and I don’t know how I’m going to pay it back,” she said. Captain Mpande Khoza said they have opened a case of fraud and warned people to beware of such scams.’
