Virgins sent shock waves through the music industry when they dominated the Metro FM Awards in Durban last night.
In the rap genre, big dawgs AKA and Cassper Nyovest were left eating dust by newbies Fifi Cooper, with three gongs, and Emtee, who won four.
Emtee won best music video, beating R&B king Donald and Da L.E.S, among others.
But the musician commanded respect when he beat Cassper Nyovest and Riky Rick to clinch the award for best hip-hop album.
He even got a standing ovation as the new king of hip-hop in Mzansi when he scooped best remix, outgunning AKA and Afro-pop songbird Kelly Khumalo. He also won listeners’ choice.
The trailblazing Cooper won the best female album, beating Zahara and Zonke.
Cooper also won best produced album, outshining Black Coffee and Big Nuz, and was crowned best new artist.
999 Music songstress Cici was crowned queen of R&B, with her single Runaway taking best single in that genre. She also won best styled album, beating Black Coffee and Big Nuz, among others.
Kwaito king Arthur Mafokate reclaimed his place in the music industry when he won the best compilation album with Summer Ya Di Summer as well as a lifetime achievement award.
Nathi scooped best Afro-pop album with Buyelekhaya and Cassper Nyovest won best male album with Refiloe.
