When residents saw a woman walking around in full police uniform they assumed she was a police officer.
But the real cops became suspicious and ended up arresting her. This was after she failed to produce an appointment certificate.
The bogus policewoman (28) was apparently walking up and down Victoria Street in Durban on Tuesday afternoon. She was pretending to be patrolling when the real cops approached her.
Durban central cops were doing a routine patrol near Shell Garage in Victoria Street when they saw the woman. When she could not produce an appointment certificate she said she was a volunteer and the uniform she was wearing belonged to her father.
She was arrested and taken to Durban Central Police Station for questioning.
Police spokesman Captain Khephu Ndlovu confirmed the arrest. He said the woman was charged with impersonating a cop.
“She will appear in the Durban Magistrates Court soon,” he said.
Ndlovu said the cops were investigating who the uniform belonged to.
“If it is discovered there was a crime committed with the uniform, the woman could face more charges,” he said.
There have been several incidents around KZN in which cops were attacked and stripped of their uniforms and guns.
Two months ago two cops from Inanda Police Station were attacked, kidnapped and stripped of their uniforms. One of them was killed.
