A man was sentenced to two life sentences plus 69 years imprisonment by the Pietermaritzburg Circuit Court, after raping a woman and robbing her of R20, the NPA said on Thursday.
Three years after he first violated her, he attacked her again, National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Natasha Kara said.
The 34-year-old was charged with housebreaking with intent to rape, rape, and robbery with aggravating circumstances. His crimes spanned the period 2010 to 2014. He preyed on women living alone.
He was sentenced on Wednesday. He could not be named because the victims and the community knew who he was, Kara said.
In 2010, he raped a woman at knifepoint in her home. He fled with a cellphone and R20. He robbed and raped her again in May 2013, taking her cellphone and R300.
He robbed and raped a second woman a year later, and stole her cellphone.
Since the attacks, both women had been suffering from sleeping disorders, the court heard.
He was given two life sentences plus 15 years for the rapes, 15 years imprisonment for each count of robbery, and 3 years for each of the housebreaking charges.
