Are you looking for the right place to study art? The National school of the Arts (NSA) will hold auditions on 14 and 21 May for prospective art, dance, drama and music learners for the 2017 intake.
Situated in Braamfontein and ranked by the Department of Education as a ‘Centre of Excellence in Visual & Performing Arts Education’ as well as a ‘Centre of Academic Excellence’, the NSA offers intensive specialist tuition in art (visual, graphic design and 2D animation), dance (ballet, Spanish, contemporary and African contemporary), drama and music (classical and contemporary) alongside the full academic curriculum.
For out-of-town learners, weekly or termly boarding is available at the school’s hostel which offers comfortable single-room accommodation.
In addition to being the Top Performing School in the District, NSA also enjoys the distinction of being one of ‘SA’s Top 10 Most Innovative Schools’ and is consistently ranked among SA’s leading government and independent schools.
The ‘school of focused learning’ has a 17-year track record of 100% matric pass rate and 99.7% whole-school pass rate.
“Our learners pursue their real passion every day and that, coupled with the discipline and dedication needed to excel in the arts, translates into their academic work as well,” says NSA Principal Leon van Gent.
The NSA provides a nurturing environment for dynamic creative thinkers, passionate problem solvers and leaders. Learners are encouraged to explore their unique creativity and individuality in a completely non-judgemental environment.
“With an ethos and culture that celebrates diversity and difference – both culturally and artistically – the NSA learners are welcomed and celebrated for exactly who they are. We encourage our learners to be the unique individuals that they were born to be, and to be the very best that they can be. It is heartwarming to see how the NSA learners celebrate each other’s achievements – generously and sincerely. We are certainly immensely proud of our school’s unique and exceptional young learners,” concludes NSA Principal Leon van Gent.
NSA’s Alumni are a testament to the fine track record of this award-winning school: household names like Charlize Theron, Karen Zoid, Vincent Bones, Snotkop, Marc Bouwer, Thula Sindi, Kitty Phetla, Dada Masilo, Lorna Maseko and Bianca Le Grange to mention a few; and lesser known names – Best Actress in a Feature Film at Idyllwild International film Festival and Best Actress at Edinburgh Festival, the lead animator for the Harry Potter movies and several Hollywood blockbusters, the Chair of the British Cardiovascular and Medical Sciences Research Foundation and a young lady who is Special Adviser to the Minister of Energy, is ranked one of the ’50 Most Important & Influential People in Energy in Africa’ and recently was awarded the honorary title of ‘Global Shaper’ by the World Economic Forum.
