Mxakaza complained that the dust was a big problem.

“We come here to experience the so-called second top KZN horse race after the giant Durban July, but we find so many disappointments,” said Mxakaza.

“Whenever we come here we go home with dusty clothes. I have also seen models and products of local vendors tainted by dust, and you can’t even recognise what they are wearing or selling.

“I have spoken with a few other celebrities who used to attend the event and they have complained about the same thing. How could you come to the event that brings dust on your clothes? There is a great need to plant grass in the field.”

Mxakaza said he had been attending the race for years, but time management had always been poor. Saturday’s event that was graced by more than 20000 revellers started at 11am instead of the scheduled 9am start.

Mxakaza, who who won the best supporting actor award at the Simon Sabela Mabhunu Awards on Saturday night, did praise the park-and-ride system that cut traffic congestion, though.

KZN sports and recreation MEC Bongi Sithole-Moloi said they had not received any formal complaint, but were keen to put the race on the map.

“We have set aside R10-million as a department for development of the race course. We will have to engage with our partners to ensure that complaints are addressed.”
