Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Herman Mashaba, says as of January 2018 the City will be directly employing the security guards protecting its premises.
Mashaba says these security guards earn R4 000 a month which is not sufficient for their livelihood, hence the decision.
We have taken a decision that these security guards protecting our facilities must be directly employed by the City.
— Herman Mashaba, Joburg Mayor
The City has also embarked on a mission to identify owners of dilapidated buildings in the city centre which have been turned into hideouts for criminals.
Mashaba says these buildings are harbouring criminals that turn young girls into prostitutes, which is a huge challenge.
Those that we cannot find the owners, as the city we will expropriate them so that we can get these criminals out of them and turn them into low cost housing for our people.
— Herman Mashaba, Joburg Mayor
A criminal case has been opened against suspended Hawks boss Major General Berning Ntlemeza for defeating the ends of justice, says Mashaba.
He claims Ntlemeza has given instructions for cases of fraud and corruption in Johannesburg not to be investigated.
