Batsogile Lovederia Malope here stage name is Rebecca Malope a multi-award winning South African gospel singer.


Rebecca Malope was born Lovederia Batsogile Malope on 30 June 1968 in Lekazi near Nelspruit in Mpumalanga. Her Swazi mother’s name was Pauline Busisiwe (nee Twala) and her Northern Sotho father was John Malope. She started her education at Masihambisane Primary School. At the age of twelve she was already a lead vocalist in a local Mbaqanga group, Luvelo Lemaswati, which was so powerful it won competitions organised by the local radio station.

She is known as African Queen of Gospel music through out her career that has been spinning for 30 years, she sold at least 10 million albums in South Africa making her one biggest selling artists in South Africa all the time. 

Though she has mentioned this a long time ago, so many South Africans did not know that ‘Rebecca’ is a stage name. One Twitter user has caused a stir after somehow finding out that the gospel legend’s real name is Batsogile Lovederia Malope.

Now people on Twitter say they feel betrayed by this ‘revelation’. However, some are having none of it as they say they don’t recognise Batsogile.

“I bet even God knows her as ‘Rebecca Malope’ not Batsogile Lovederia Malope,” one said, while others questioned if our country is even called South Africa.

Since the beginning of her career she released 35 albums with most of them achieving multi-platinum status, platinum status and Gold status. From 2004 till date, she has been the hostess of the TV show It's Gospel Time. In 2013 she was one of the judges in Clash of Choirs South Africa
