Bloemfontein – Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema’s driver was released on free bail on Monday after being caught allegedly speeding and then refusing to co-operate with traffic officials, Free State director of traffic management George Ramotsoto said.

It was not immediately clear whether the driver appeared in court or not.

The driver was recorded allegedly driving at 187km/h in a 120km/h zone in the Parys area ahead of the EFF leader’s court date in Bloemfontein over a call to supporters to occupy vacant land.

According to Ramotsoto, traffic officers had to follow the vehicle all the way to Ventersburg, more than 100km away, because the driver allegedly would not stop.

He was finally arrested in Ventersburg in line with traffic law that dictates that being caught driving at that speed means automatic arrest.

Malema then took the wheel and drove himself the rest of the way to make it to court on time.

Ramotsoto did not immediately have further details at hand, including the driver’s name and his court date.

Police referred queries to the office of the Free State MEC for transport, which in turn referred queries to the police.
