Bafana Bafana international Thulani Serero has not been given a jersey number for the new season at Ajax Amsterdam and has been told he must train with the club’s reserves.
This was confirmed by Ajax’s coach Peter Bosz to reporters, as he hinted he was not all that happy with the decision of club management.
“Was this my choice? No, I got a list [of first team players] of Ajax,” he said. “What is the reason for it, I cannot answer as a coach. That's up to the club.”
Serero’s contract with Ajax runs until June 2017 and according to reports in the Netherlands, the club is keen to cash in on him either in this transfer window or the next.
He remains sidelined by a knee injury for the moment, which could delay any move, while a nightmare scenario for him is that he sits in the Ajax reserves for the next five months until the January transfer window opens.
Serero moved to the Netherlands from Ajax Cape Town in 2011 for a reported fee of 2.5-million Euros (R38-million) and has won three Dutch League titles in his time there.
He has made 121 appearances in all competitions for the club, scoring 10 goals
