The South African government has announced indications to add Shona as an official language. Shone is the most spoken language in neighboring Zimbabwe.
An estimated 3 200 000 million Zimbabweans currently call South Africa their home. ‘We are a rainbow nation and it would only make sense to include Shona speaking people in our country. The other two official languages are Ndebele and English. These are already in our list of official language’ , an official said.
This development will mean South Africa now has 12 official languages. These are English, Afrikaans, isiZulu, isiXhosa, Northern Sotho, Tswana, Tsonga, Swazi, Venda, Ndebele and the new addition, Shona.
The next stage will be to draft the new language into the constitution. Zimbabweans in South Africa welcomed the announcement and said it showed we are all brothers and sisters. A Zimbabwean lady, Sharon , who works as a waitress in Midrand said, ‘We are happy for this. We now hope one of our own will be voted in parliament’
