Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Brighton Mhlongo has been named as the well-known soccer player arrested for speeding on Friday night.
This is according to two independent sources close to the investigation.
“It’s alleged that Mhlongo was driving at 173km/h on the Golden Highway and was driving a Volkswagen Polo without registration plates,” one source told The Star on Sunday.
The source added that the soccer star was detained at Langlaagte police station but would not confirm if he was still in custody or had been released on bail at the weekend.
Langlaagte police could not be reached for comment on the matter.
Following news of the goalkeeper’s arrest, Transport Minister Dipuo Peters blamed the Premier Soccer League leadership for failing to teach soccer stars about road safety.
“People who are celebrities, people who are stars in sport, must be also be stars in road safety.”
According to Joburg metro police department spokesperson Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, hundreds of arrests have been made over the Easter weekend for speeding and drunk driving.
“A total of 653 arrests have been made since the beginning of Easter across Johannesburg,” he said.
In August last year, Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brilliant Khuzwayo was nabbed for speeding in Durban.
