Kurt Zouma was stretchered off during Chelsea’s clash with Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.
The French defender appeared in serious discomfort after landing awkwardly just before the hour mark.
Zouma’s knee appeared to buckle, with his ankle giving way as Chelsea players and fans feared the worst.
He was replaced by England defender Gary Cahill, who has lost his place since Guus Hiddink’s arrival.
Chelsea’s defensive situation has come under the spotlight in the past week after John Terry announced he would be leaving the club in the summer.
Chelsea fell behind shortly after Zouma’s departure as Jesse Lingard struck a fine volley.
They had struggled to find a way past the excellent David De Gea who kept them at bay with a string of fine saves, including a one-handed stop to deny Branislav Ivanovic.
Digo Costa however equalised in injury time.
