According to police sources, Lurayi was arrested on Wednesday and appeared at the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Friday, where she was granted bail.
Lurayi, best known for her role as Phumzile on SABC1 sitcom City Ses'la and its sequel Ses'Top La, could not be reached for comment as her phone rang unanswered. She also did not respond to messages.
Police spokesman Stanley Bopape confirmed a case of theft was opened against the 2006 South African Film and Television Awards award winner.
"I can confirm that a case of theft is being investigated, but I have no further details as the docket was taken to court," said Bopape.
"I'm not sure if she was granted bail. We'll have all the details once the docket is back at the station."
Information contained in the police statement, seen by Sunday World, alleges that Lurayi stole household items, pots, bedding and a fridge, all worth more than R200000.
"The complainant alleged that ... he left his house to go to Eastern Cape and all was in order. He left the keys with his domestic ... as the house is for sale and she must give the agent the keys," read the statement in part.
"On 28-11-2015 he received an SMS from his ex-girlfriend Busisiwe that she wants to collect her things. On 29-11-2015 the agent phoned him and asked him if he was moving out and he said no."
The statement further revealed how the agent told the ex-boyfriend that Lurayi's car was seen at his Hurlingham, Randburg, home loading goods at about midnight.
"And when he came back, he found that his Samsung fridge and TV, mattresses, microwave, pots, carpet, bedding, couch, baby feeding chair and washing machine were taken from the house. He suspects that his ex-girlfriend Busisiwe Lurayi is the one who took the goods," the statement concluded.
Other acting roles Lurayi has enjoyed include:
Winnie Molepo, a lawyer who worked for the Sokhulu brothers in the SABC1 drama series Sokhulu & Partners.
She then joined the cast of the then Generations as Swazi Lukhele, a socialite married to David Lukhele.
That was followed by her stint as a main cast member of the Mzansi Magic sitcom S.I.E.S., in which she played a head of the incompetent government department of Social Impact and Empowerment Strategy.
She's also hosted Million Rand Money Drop on M-Net.
